I am a thirty-something, pretty hip, pretty shapely Californian, and there is not one pattern in this book that I would wear, let alone spend the time knitting. “Sexy” is a misnomer — “trashy” would be better. I was hoping for some non-dumpy-looking sweaters and flattering garments, and instead I got see-through tops, peek-a-boo swimsuits, and bare midriffs galore. The only person I know who has the body to get away with this stuff is my 14-year-old niece, and her mom wouldn’t let her out of the house wearing anything in this book! Save your money. Wrap yourself in cellophane and save yourself the trouble of getting out your needles.

Ashley Paige has produced sexy knits for the stars, with designs which you may recognize from the pages of Seventeen, InStyle and other top magazines: now under one cover are not just photos but how-to instructions for knitted swimsuits, tops, and cover-ups for beach and bedroom alike. Paige’s most popular designs are accompanied by patterns, construction tips, and models. A ‘must’ for avid knitters who want more than blanket designs.

Some really cool stuff in here. Now the trick is to get my girlfriend to make it…

This book looks promising at first….it has great photography including multiple photos of each piece – and often with more than one model or with a different yarn. I love it when knitting books do this. Tragically, the good things about this book end there.
First on the list of not-so-good things: they only provide directions for sizes 1-9….and not even all the patterns go up to size 9. Since the average American woman is a size 14 and sexy comes in sizes higher than 9, it makes this book less versatile than it should be.
Even if you are a young, size-nine-or-smaller knitter, you may not want this book as I’m not sure I’d want anyone other than my husband to see me wearing these pieces. Unlike some approaches to sexy knitting that focus on being sexy without showing tons of skin, Paige’s approach seems to be, well, a bit more scandalous.
Then there’s the problem with pattern accuracy and the lack of attention on Potter Craft’s part to help deal with pattern errata (dealt with in more detail by other reviewers)
The conclusion? If you are a size 1-9 knitter who either a) would like to make some scandalous knitwear to be enjoyed by a significant other (despite pattern errors) or b) wants to look like a skank in public, and you don’t mind errors in patterns you pay for….this may be the book for you. If that’s not you, you may want to wait to check out some different titles. I would recommend Knitting Lingerie Style: More Than 30 Basic and Lingerie-Inspired Designs which has not only lingerie patterns but other sexy knitwear that one could actually wear in public.
